Westlake Boys High School has a proud Water Polo tradition of 30 years. Past honours in the sport include five National Premier School Boy’s titles over the last ten years including runners up in 2012 and 2013. This in in addition to five North Island Senior Championships.

The following players have gone on to achieve the highest honours by playing for the New Zealand Men’s team: Owen Chambers (2014), Jonny Clarke (2014), Alex Mackenzie (2012), John Love (2007-09), David and Chris Broome (2007), Nick Grieve (2007), Carl Ainley Coach (2006-07) and Stephen Knights (1994-98). Throughout the years we have had many talented players representing their country at age group level. More recently, Mitchell Goff played in the New Zealand Junior men’s team at the Junior Worlds in Perth and Jarvis Jensen has been named in the 2015 School Boys’ team to play Australia. Current New Zealand age group representatives include: Liam and Corban Wedlock Aston NZ U16.

Westlake fields five teams in 2017, one in the Auckland Premier grade, one in the Senior B and three junior teams. The Premier and Senior B teams participate in Term 1 and they start pre-season training in term 4. North Islands and Nationals for the Premier team are in March (Auckland) and April (Wellington) respectively. Trans-Tasman tours take place regularly and the next one is planned for 2017 in Melbourne.  The Premier squad at the end of 2016 also competed in the Trans Tasman in Auckland which was great pre-season training for the boys.

Senior Water polo

Our Premier team has been coached for the past six years by Davor Carevic who up until recently was the Head Coach of North Harbour Water Polo club and is currently coaching the New Zealand Schoolgirls team and New Zealand Youth team preparing the World Championships. He is assisted by Westlake Old Boy Jake Bennett who was in the Westlake “Dream Team” (1999-2001).  Jake, along with TIC Rachel Peak, instigated the Westlakers vs Premier team game in 2015 which has become a regular feature in our Water polo calendar.

Junior  Water polo teams

Three teams in 2017 play in the Auckland competition in Terms 1 and 4 with the penultimate competition for the Junior A  and B team being the North Island championships at the end of November. All three junior teams also play in the local North Harbour competition throughout the year and are coached by former Head Boy, Andre Jackson (2015) (Junior A), Premier  and Senior team players assisting including: Kyle Shears (Deputy Head Boy, 2017, Campbell Knowles, Jackson Munday, Zach Newton-Cross and Mickey Lim). We are proud of our student coaches and our old boys who give up their time generously to coach our Junior teams and develop our younger players.  We also have numerous student coaches who help our Intermediate and Primary schools like: Flippa Ball at Takapuna Primary and Year 7 & 8 teams at TNIS.

We invite all parents and players to join us at the end of every year for our annual Junior Water Polo prize giving ceremony. Senior prizegiving will be held at school after the Senior season. It is a great opportunity to thank all of our supporters. All players are acknowledged as well as individual outstanding player awards for each team and we present a leavers cap to all 7th formers and wish them well with their future endeavours. North Harbour Club also reward the Junior league players with their Prizegiving at the end of the year.
