Head of Harbour Regatta
The Westlake Rowing squad competed at Lake Pupuke on Saturday at the Head of Harbour regatta, which doubles as the Auckland Championship regatta. Crews from all age groups raced well, gaining a total of 13 medals. The Premier squad was particularly successful, winning the Auckland title in the U18 coxed four, gaining silver medals in the U18 pair and quad, and gaining bronze medals in the U18 pair and eight.
The final race of the day, the U18 eight, was hotly contested in difficult conditions due to a strong side-tail wind. St Kentigern College and Sacred Heart blasted out of the start, leading the Westlake crew by a significant margin early in the race. Westlake kept their cool and rowed admirably, pulling back both crews in the second half of the race. However, they unfortunately couldn’t quite topple them over the 1000m sprint distance, going down by a quarter of a boat length, with St Kentigerns the eventual winners. The Westlake crew can take a lot of positives out of the race as they maintained their composure in difficult conditions. With the remaining races this season over 2000m, the crew will relish the opportunity to show their form over the full race distance.
