Hockey has had a proud history of team success as well as individual player achievement over many years. Our premier team were Rankin Cup winners, and National Champions in 2015. They also held the Bartholomew Cup, the schoolboy Hockey equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield. They Premier Team also has a proud history of success within the Auckland Supercity and North Harbour Premier competitions.
In recent years our other top teams have shown great depth and strength and this is clearly evident in the number of representative players that have been selected for North Harbour. We regularly contribute over half the athletes to each respective team representing their region. We have had a number of players who have been selected for the New Zealand U18 team, including Mitchell Ottow, Benji Edwards, JP Rossouw and Keegan Russell in 2015. In addition, several of our players have gone on and played for the Black Sticks. In recent years we have Steve Edwards (2007-2015), Nick Wilson (2008-present), Joseph Bartholomew (2009), James Coughlan (2010 – present) and more recently Cory Bennett (2013-Present).
Westlake currently fields 10 teams, playing at a variety of levels. We have our 1st XI and 2nd XI teams taking part in the Supercity competition, which pits them against some of the top schools throughout Auckland. The rest of the teams compete in the North Harbour competition where they notch up top honours on a regular basis.
Registration takes place in April each year. Most of the trainings take place on our tennis courts, whilst our merit teams train at Westlake Girls on the new blue astro turf, either in the mornings or afternoons. All our merit teams are coached by highly qualified teachers and Westlakers who have dedicated their time and expertise in developing our players at all levels.
We have several exchanges during a year against Hamilton and Tauranga Boys as well as participating in an annual Quadrangular tournaments. Our U15 team also take part in the Tanner Cup. The Hockey boys have had a fantastic opportunity with overseas trips during the last few years. Since 2011 our Hockey teams have travelled to Singapore, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, England and Australia.
Hockey remains a popular, traditional sport at Westlake, succeeding in forming many friendships and helping the boys develop a sense of discipline and learn many of life’s lessons.
