The Westlake Boys chess club is open to all students at lunchtime in Room C5 during Terms 1, 2 and 3, where anywhere between 15 and 30 players of varying ability will meet to battle over the board.

Westlake Boys has a proud tradition in Chess fielding many strong teams in all divisions over many years. The more serious chess players have the opportunity to represent the school in the Auckland Chess Competition.

Westlake has gradually increased the number of teams entered in this competition, currently entering two teams in the Senior A division, two teams in the Senior B division and two teams in the Junior division. The preliminary competition is held during Term 2 and the best placed teams compete in the Auckland Finals in Term 3.

Recently our Senior A team were runners-up in the Auckland Competition and for the first time our Senior B finished third.  As only one team per school can enter the New Zealand Secondary Schools Tournament, the Senior B team could not qualify for Nationals. The Senior A Team won the New Zealand title in 2013 and hope to regain that title after being runners-up in 2014.

The current 2015 Senior A1 team consists of:
Board 1: William Li
Board 2:  Hao Jia
Board 3: William Zhang
Board 4: Winston Yao

Teacher in Charge: Cecilia Gouws
