Basketball

Basketball has a proud tradition at Westlake Boys High School, not only at the top level with national success, but also as a participation sport, with approximately 400 students involved in the programme on a yearly basis.

The Premier Basketball team is a consistent force among schools in the Auckland Competition and currently has five national titles to their name. Deputy Principal Mark Jackson has been an instrumental part of this dynasty, Coaching the team to four of these championships including the first in 2005. When the “Prems” play at home on Friday nights, the Westlake Gymnasium is bursting with energy. It is always exciting to see the gym filled with old boys and current students alike in support of their school.

Our Academy of Sport pathway allows students to develop their basketball potential. Under the guidance of Mark Jackson and external coaching experts, the Academy teaches students strong fundamentals while targeting individual skill-sets. Further focus is placed on working together efficiently in various systems. Students also gain an understanding of our place in the world game, and their basketball journey beyond Westlake.

Our development teams compete in the Harbour Basketball League. This includes the Premier 2, Senior A, Under 17 A and Under 17 B teams, who all play high-level senior basketball against top North Shore schools. The Junior Premier side are our top junior team. They are comprised of students in both Year 9 and 10 who have the potential to represent the Premier Team in future years. Other top junior players are placed in the Junior Red and Junior Green teams. At Year 9 level Westlake caters for all students interested in taking up the sport of basketball. There are eight Year 9 teams, all of which hold their own and are well supported in their development.

Training times are as follows:

  • Premiers and Senior A team: Tuesdays and Thursdays after school
  • Premier 2: after the Premiers on Tuedays and Thursdays
  • Junior Prems: Mondays after school in addition to their AoS class.
  • Junior Red and Junior Green: Mondays after school
  • U17B: Mondays after the Junior Prems
  • Year 9 teams: lunchtime training
  • Westlake Basketball Association (social leagues): optional training at lunchtime Thursdays and Fridays.

The Westlake Basketball Association celebrates participation and brotherhood. Developed in 2018 under TIC Basketball Karl Jorgensen and Sports Co-ordinator Andrew Lydiard, the WBA includes a junior and a senior league and allows approximately 200 students to enjoy the sport of basketball. Students develop leadership in managing their own teams and games are run by qualified referees.

Westlake’s basketball fraternity includes many famous names, among them Kirk Penney, Thomas Abercrombie and Rob Loe, as well as the Webster brothers, Corey and Tai, all of whom have been important players for both the New Zealand Breakers and the Tall Blacks. These players, as well as more recent leavers Jack Salt, Mathew Freeman and Isaac Letoa, have used basketball as a pathway to education opportunities overseas, attending high profile American Universities.
