Why Study English?
Literacy in English gives students access to the understanding, knowledge, and skills they need to participate fully in the social, cultural, political, and economic life of New Zealand and the wider world.
To be successful participants, they need to be effective oral, written, and visual communicators who are able to think critically and in depth. By understanding how language works, students are equipped to make appropriate language choices and apply them in a range of contexts. Students learn to deconstruct and critically interrogate texts in order to understand the power of language to enrich and shape their own and others’ lives. Students appreciate and enjoy texts in all their forms. The study of New Zealand and world literature contributes to students’ developing sense of identity, their awareness of New Zealand’s bicultural heritage, and their understanding of the world. Success in English is fundamental to success across the curriculum. English presents students with opportunities to engage with and develop the key competencies in diverse contexts.
Why Study Computing?
You probably make use of technology in your everyday lives at home, in school and on the go. Through computing you will develop ICT skills which will be beneficial to you throughout your school career and beyond. Computing courses include aspects of the following: software packages and their use, hardware and programming. The skills you learn are universal and can take you anywhere in the world.
Why Study Music?
Music is a unique form of communication in which ideas, emotions, images, moods and meaning are conveyed through sound. It is also a highly developed art form in which all of these things can be expressed through a sophisticated and coherant notated language. It enables us to give form to feelings and to experience and value the feelings of others. It is an important part of the New Zealand teenage culture and therefore a valued part of the New Zealand Curriculum. The creative processes that we draw on in Music have wider applications: they develop our capacity for lateral thinking, expression and for involving the imagination in problem solving. Musicians are self-motivated, highly- organised, thinking students who often feature as top achievers in a wide variety of subjects.
Why Study Art?
Art is especially concerned with the development of visual perception and aesthetics. It is a means of communication and a means of expressing ideas and feelings. Art encourages personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual and critical thinking, powers of observation, an analytical ability and practical attitudes. It leads to greater understanding of the role of the visual arts in the history of civilisations. It will widen cultural horizons and enrich the individual. It complements literary, mathematical, scientific and factual subjects.
Why Study Social Sciences?
The Social Sciences are about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. The Social Sciences learning area is vital in developing students who are able to understand, participate in, and contribute to the local, national and global communities in which we live and work.
Why Study Languages?
All students benefit from learning another language from the earliest practicable age. Such learning broadens students’ general language abilities and brings their own language into sharper focus. It enriches them intellectually, socially, and culturally, it offers an understanding of the ways in which other people think and behave, and it also furthers international relations and trade.
What’s Commerce About?
You probably make use of commerce skills every day – every time you go to a shop, listen to news or use your bank account! Through Commerce you develop an expertise in understanding how the commercial world we live in operates – essential skills for surviving in today’s world.
Why Study Science?
Science is a way of investigating, understanding, and explaining our natural, physical world and the wider universe. It involves generating and testing ideas, gathering evidence – including by making observations, carrying out investigations and modelling, and communicating and debating with others – in order to develop scientific knowledge, understanding, and explanations. Scientific progress comes from logical, systematic work and from creative insight, built on a foundation of respect for evidence. Different cultures and periods of history have contributed to the development of Science.
Why Study Mathematics?
Maths helps us to think logically; from carefully stating the problem and planning our solution to executing steps in the appropriate order and evaluating our solution.
Maths helps us to identify patterns and relationships.
Maths helps us keep score – not just in sports, but in everything we measure: time, distance, money, cooking quantities, building materials, etc.
Maths helps us make better choices and evaluate and reflect on the choices we have made.
Maths and Statistics helps us decide whether the conclusions of polls are reasonable or not.
Why Study Technology?
The subjects offered within Technology offer our students a wide range of life skills and vocational opportunities as well as the satisfaction of producing practical outcomes. Due to the shortage of qualified specialists within New Zealand, demand and remuneration are at an all time high for students with these skills.
Why Study Physical Education?
Physical Education helps students to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies to live healthy and physically active lives at school and for the rest of their lives. The students will learn ‘in, through, and about’ movement, gaining an understanding that movement is integral to human expression and can contribute to people’s pleasure and enhance their lives. The course will also widen views on society and the effect societal influences have on participation in physical activities.
