Dr. Tony Fernando – Science of Happiness

We are excited to offer another opportunity to hear Dr Tony Fernando speak at Westlake Boys after the success of his presentation at our 2018 Mother Son Breakfast.

We would like to invite you and members of the local community to attend this evening and hear what he has to say on the Science of Happiness. If you couldn’t make our sell out breakfast, now is your chance to bring family and friends to listen to a passionate and entertaining speaker who will offer you sage advice to take home. Maybe you did listen to him at the breakfast, but would like to come back and hear more.

Tony is a psychiatrist and a senior lecturer in Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland. He has received multiple awards, including the Chair’s Award, the highest recognition given by the New Zealand Medical Association to any doctor in New Zealand, for his work on physician wellbeing. In January of 2017, he received temporary ordination as a Buddhist monk in Myanmar. He is in the final stages of his PhD at the University of Auckland, studying compassion in medicine. More recently, he started a weekly mindfulness and emotional balance programme for inmates at Mt Eden Correctional Facility in Auckland.

Here is what some people said about Dr Tony Fernando:

“I just want to say I really enjoyed listening to Dr Tony.  He was fantastic”

“The speaker was outstanding. I could have listened to him for hours!”

“The speaker was fantastic – very funny and very real.”

All of us want to be happy but many of us tend to chase things (e.g. money, possessions, grades, status, appearances, “likes” on Facebook) that lead to short term happiness but long term emptiness. To be happy, it helps to learn how the mind perceives different “happiness” states, and know the “traps” the mind conjures to help with survival, but might lead to anxiety and dissatisfaction. You are not guaranteed to be immediately happy after this talk but at least you will be equipped with information that might guide you in your lifelong search for happiness.
