Westlake Boys Premier League (14) vs St Paul’s College (18)
Westlake Premier League travelled to last year’s CRL champions St Paul’s for a critically important game. The match started with heavy contact from both sides in boggy conditions, making handling extremely difficult. The loss of inspirational Westlake hooker Anthony Po-Ching early on in the match was a massive blow for the away team. St Paul’s crossed first to take the lead 6-0 but Westlake responded brilliantly with a superb cross field kick try to a diving Hemi McCarthy. Keepa Wiki converted from the side-line to lock the scores at 6 all. Westlake then took the lead 12-6 right on half time after a bomb scramble with Zae Wallace touching down and another Keepa Wiki conversion from out wide.
The second half saw St Paul’s come out strongly, dominating field possession and position which eventually led them to cross the line to level the score. A converted penalty in the last ten minutes by Keepa Wiki swung the lead to Westlake again at 14-12. Unfortunately errors crept into the Westlake game, and a reduced bench with injured players saw the boys battling to hang onto their lead. After sustained pressure St Paul’s scored a try to take the score to 18-14, a lead which they held to the end.
It was another close loss for the boys against one of New Zealand’s true champion Rugby League Schools. The team will now have to win their final two matches, starting next week against Aorere College to finish in the top four.
