Headmaster’s Newsletter 1 July

Dear Parents and Guardians

Westlake’s Got Talent marked the start of a busy week.  We had a very well attended Careers evening on Wednesday, and tonight we have our annual Recent Leavers’ Reunion.  Although the weather has been dramatic this week, the boys have been settled and are hopefully working hard towards their assessments.

Tomorrow, the 1st XV play Rosmini College at home in a televised match.  At the same time, the 1st XI will be playing St Kentigern College on the artificial turf.  Everyone is very welcome for what should be a great afternoon.

Have a lovely weekend.

Westlake’s Got Talent Trophy Returns to Westlake Boys!

On Monday night the auditorium was buzzing as ten acts, five from Westlake Boys and five from Westlake Girls, took to the stage for the 2016 Finals of Westlake’s Got Talent.  The audience was treated to some extraordinary talent from students of both schools, performing a wide variety of acts.  The evening’s judges were Kay Lee from Mai FM and Suzanne Lynch, a media talent coach and successful recording artist.

After all ten acts the evening came to a climax with the announcement of the winners.  The judges commented that what they had seen gave them faith in the future of New Zealand entertainment and how difficult it was to choose a winner.  They awarded 1st place to “Level 4 Music” (pictured right), a rock band from Westlake Boys – Corbin Cantell, Nick Curry, Andrew Clark-Howard, Kelby Cai, Ray Cassim & Roykhien Wanglert.  They performed a medley of ‘70s and ‘80s hits, winning the audience over with great showmanship and a focus on the individual band members as excellent soloists. Level 4
In 2nd place was a four-girl vocal group from Westlake Girls, Mr JC, who performed a medley of Destiny’s Child numbers with big voices and sassy dance moves.  Two acts received equal 3rd place: Joshua Tan, a musical comedian, who wrote and performed a very funny song with clever, topical lyrics, and Lilly Davies, a solo singer-songwriter whose beautiful song about her grandfather had the audience enthralled.

The other three acts from the Boys’ school were Jonathan Zou, a talented pianist who played blindfolded, Cameron Brownsey, a Year 9 student who sang a highly amusing musical number, and JY Pink, a rock band who gave a lively rendition of “Queen” numbers.  The judges remarked on the high standard of all the acts and commended all the Westlake music staff for their huge contribution to the students’ success.

Thanks go to Mr Robinson and Mr McClymont for the many hours of work they put into Westlake’s Got Talent from the heats to the finals, to the sound, lighting and stage crews and to the team of student leaders from both schools who worked so hard to make the evening a success.

In 2016 the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of the passing of arguably the greatest dramatic writer who ever lived: William Shakespeare. Westlake Boys’ and Westlake Girls’ have therefore combined once again to bring you William Shakespeare’s most popular and enduring comedy: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

This “…Dream”, however, will be quite different, as the production will incorporate both Physical Theatre and Tikanga/Te Ao Māori, to bring audiences a version of the play that is youthful, vital, energetic, playful and truly bicultural.   Unusually, the production will be played with the audience on three sides, partly simulating the experience of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre. Furthermore, the first row of each of the three audience tiers will be “Rumpus Zones”, allowing audience members close contact with the actors, as if they were groundlings at the Globe Theatre.

The production is brought to you by the same students and creatives who staged the thought-provoking and multi-award winning “Assassins”, by Stephen Sondheim, in 2015.

MAGS 0 vs WBHS 1 – Premier league

The Westlake first XI football team extended their winning run to three games with a hard fought away win at Mount Albert Grammar. On a muddy pitch, Westlake showed plenty of character and deserved to win and move above their opposition in the Premier League table.

Westlake started positively but the home side had an early chance to take the lead when, after some hesitant Westlake defending, their striker was presented with a clear run on goal only to send his shot wide of the target. Westlake responded when Harrison Piper’s cross from the right was met at the far post by View Rungpao but the wingers shot flashed wide. Shortly afterwards Rungpao’s left sided free kick was comfortably saved by the MAGS keeper.

Football poster WBHS vs St Kents
Westlake took the lead in spectacular fashion when Greg Nimmo curled a beautifully shaped free kick over the defensive wall and into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. It was a goal of real class and the players celebrated accordingly. Piper had a glorious chance to double Westlake’s lead when Matt Conroy’s pass found him in space on the right. The winger skipped past one defender but blasted his shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Westlake were now on top and, when Keanen Bhagaloo delivered a dangerous cross from the left, a MAGS defender headed the ball beyond his own keeper with the crossbar saving his blushes. When Westlake won another free kick close to the box Nimmo again struck his shot sweetly only to see the keeper palm the ball onto the cross bar and off the post. From the resulting corner the ball again seemed destined for the back of the net before it was cleared off the goal line by a desperate MAGS defender. MAGS were saved by the half time whistle as it seemed only a matter of time before Westlake would score again.  Continue reading here……

Westlake Boys 1st XV vs Birkenhead College 1st XV

Up to this game and barring the first 5 minutes of the Rosmini game, Westlake’s 1st XV have been fortunate enough not to play in wet weather conditions. Saturday’s weather was very wet but this did not dampen proceedings on the field and the team settled into their work immediately with Harry Forbes barging over within 90 seconds after the start. Five minutes later Fine Inisi showed his class again with silky footwork to score his first of two equally impressive tries. By the half time whistle Westlake had built a 43 point lead.

The scoring continued in the second half with Lotu Inisi finishing off his hattrick of tries in the game. Leon Thambiran finished the scoring with a 50m try under the posts after bursting through the Birkenhead defence from a tap penalty on half way.

Scoreboard: Westlake 76 – Birkenhead 0 (Halftime: 43 – 0)

Hockey Results

Westlake 1st XI travelled to Auckland Grammar School for a top of the table clash. Westlake started badly and struggled to deal with a fast and physical Auckland Grammar side going 2-0 down at half time. Westlake did improve in the second half but Auckland Grammar were deserved winners scoring another goal to finish the match 3-0.  The home team then hosted both Westlake teams for an after match which was the highlight of the evening.
