Chris Smith

Westlakers 4colWhen the 2013 ITM Cup season was launched earlier this year, Westlaker and North Harbour lock Chris Smith took the field in the “Battle of the Bridges” where the off-field lawyer will played his 48th game for his Union.

A talented academic and remarkable rugby player, Chris was at Westlake from 2001-2005 and played in the 1st XV from 5th form, captaining the side to a North Harbour Secondary Schools Championship title in his final year at school. Chris played New Zealand U17 in 2003 and 2004 and was a member of the New Zealand Secondary School team in 2004 and vice-captain in 2005. In his last year at school Chris was a prefect, received his Sports Colours and won the Simon Bryan Shield for the Sporting Achievement of the Year. Other 1st XV member of the 2005 team were former Harbour representatives Michael Harris (Australia), Ben Botica (Harlequins) and Taione Vea (Tonga).

2005_Rugby1stXVNHChampions(1)After finishing at Westlake Chris studied law at The University of Auckland combining the courses and lectures with playing grassroots rugby for Takapuna Rugby Club and professional rugby with North Harbour and the Blues. One of the highlights in his rugby career to date has been to captain the New Zealand Junior All Blacks to two Junior World Championship titles in Ireland and Wales in 2007 and 2008.

Though his Harbour team were unable to impress during the ITM Cup last year, Chris played an outstanding season winning more lineout ball than any other forward in the competition. Chris has recently finished his law degree and would like to get involved with athlete representation to help other sportsmen and women reach their goals. He will also continue his professional rugby career and Westlakers and Westlake Boys’ High School wish Chris and the rest of the team all the best for his 2013 ITM Cup campaign.
