Sports Tours Funding

Westlake participates in a number of national and international sports events every year. A number of our teams attend national championships each year or go on tours. These trips are often expensive and fundraising is an important element in ensuring our boys can make these tours.

In recent years we have had rugby teams go to South Africa, South America and France, cricket to South Africa, England, Holland and Australia and athletics to South Africa also. These tours have certainly enhanced sport at Westlake.

Apart from some sponsorships all funding has been through parent contribution or plain hard work. Delivering phone books, stocktaking, stadium cleans, firewood etc have been major contributors to the funds required. Other major events have included dinners, golf days, sausage sizzles, house painting, trivial pursuits, event marshalling etc. Apart from the fact that fundraising is vital in monetary terms it also helps bring the boys together and work as a team – a vital element on and off the field.

In the next year we will have more teams going overseas. Waterpolo is off to Australia this year as are two cricket teams.
Hockey is off to England and Holland in 2011 and athletics are off to South Africa. On top of overseas tours we also have to fund national events. All in all plenty of hard work goes in to fundraising but the benefits to the boys are clearly visible.

Westlake will continue to undertake tours. We are lucky we have dedicated teachers who are prepared to undertake these tours backed by hardworking and enthusiastic parent groups.
