Westlake Boys Cycling is a club with a proud history that is very committed to achieving at the highest levels in New Zealand Secondary School Cycling. This year, the club is led by head coach, Eric de Freitas. Eric has been involved in mountain biking and road cycling and has competed across various levels from junior to elite level. Having been involved with the Westlake Cycling programme since 2014, he takes an interest in the scientific side of sport performance training without forgetting the social, educational and recreational side of cycling. Eric has a degree in Physical Education/Sport Sciences.

Eric is joined by experienced and committed coaches that help develop Westlake’s cyclists into top level competitors. A number of old boys assist on a regular basis with our weekly training schedule. A very strong committee and parent group play an integral role in supporting the coaches and the athletes to achieve the success that Westlake enjoys.

Many Westlakers have progressed onto careers in the professional ranks, including James Oram (class of 2010) – Bontrager Pro Cycling, .S.A. and Taylor Gunman (class of 2008) – Terra footwear Bicycleline, Belgium.

Westlake competes in a number of key events throughout the winter:

  • AKSS team time trial series – 7 Sunday events between May and September.
  • North Harbour junior tour – in May
  • North Island Champs – July holidays
  • NZSS Individual Champs – First week of September (Mt Wellington)
  • NZSS Champs – September holidays (Palmerston North).

Key trainings are held on Tuesday and Friday mornings, leaving the school at 5.45am. Additional road trainings/indoor sessions are scheduled in as required. The Westlake Boys Cycling Club has a scholarship system that provides bikes to students that are new to the sport for a season. Students are also able to safely store bikes and equipment in the school’s club shed.
