Parents and Teachers Association

PTA – Come and join us!

The PTA provides a link between the wider Westlake community and the school.

We facilitate opportunities for parents and caregivers to get to know each other better and to be involved at school.  Our goals are to organise functions which are fun, interesting, and appealing to parents, and to provide a voice for parents.

The PTA raises funds to support projects which benefit the school community and the students. Most of our funds are earned through running the Trading Post (the Second Hand Uniform shop) and through participation in the school Gala.  In 2011, the PTA donated over $36,000 to the school for various projects.

We work in co-operation with and provide assistance to the school where we can.  We are a volunteer, non-profit organisation. We are under the umbrella of the NZPTA and a registered Charity.

Joining us is a great opportunity to get to know more about the school, to meet new people and form friendships. You can be involved as little or as much as you like and we welcome parents, caregivers and teachers to come to our events and meetings.

Speakers

"Hot Tips on Parenting Teenagers" Wednesday 27th June 2012

Parenting teenagers is often likened to white-water rafting - sometimes scary - sometimes exhilarating!  Many parents consider parenting teenagers the most challenging task they have ever tackled; but they can also be the best years of your life.

Respected speakers Bruce and Amanda Pilbrow will show you how to understand your teenager, how to communicate with them and how to give them the love and limits that will get them through their teenage years. Topics covered include:

  • understanding change and learning to handle it
  • helping your teenager live in their culture without losing their future
  • moving towards flying solo - they need you but also need to start breaking away
  • respect, boundaries and consequences
  • the style that fits: the parent-coach
  • teaching your teen how to think
  • keeping your teen on board
  • sex, drugs and alcohol
  • challenging and inspiring your teen

You'll go home from this event with new ideas, a heap of tips to try and a big dose of optimism!

Bruce Pilbrow is a Westlake old-boy, and currently CEO of The Parenting Place.  He appears regularly on TV and in the media, and is a sought after presenter on parenting topics.  A former commissioner of the Families Commission, Bruce is well regarded in the wider community for his expertise on parenting and family. Amanda is a full time youth worker and an artist, as well as being a mother to three children.

Tickets can be booked on line www.theparentingplace.com or email events@westlake.school.nz.  Also available from WBHS Student Services from 16th May 2012, or any PTA committee member.

Supporting School Functions

There are a number of school events at which the PTA provides assistance.  These are always fun, and a good opportunity to meet new people.  The New Parents Evening was held in March, and the school will host an Information Evening later in the year.

The PTA provides refreshments at these functions, and an opportunity for parents to network and ask questions about the school in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Teachers and Staff Morning Tea

Close to the end of the year, the PTA hosts a morning tea to recognise the important contribution of staff and teachers to the school.  This is always enthusiastically received.   The morning tea for 2012 will be held on Thursday 1st November.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

The shop is open every Tuesday from 12.30 to 1.30pm and is located in the building behind Heron House.  The shop earns valuable revenue for the PTA which then benefits our school.  Jayne Jarrold organizes the roster.  Should you be able to help out, please call her on: 410 8421 or email Jarrold@orcon.net.nz

Would you like your son’s old uniform to go to a good home and benefit the school at the same time?  Please consider donating it to the Second Hand Uniform Shop.  We are particularly looking for shorts; the popular sizes are 80 and 84.  Some boys need only one item of the old uniform to tide them over for the remainder of this year.  The uniform can be dropped off at the school office.
We have a form that needs to be completed. The form can be downloaded here, completed and attached to the bag of items.
We also have forms in the office.

Trading Post

We are starting to sell good quality, clean, second-hand footwear in the shop.   SPORTS SHOES AND SCHOOL SHOES.  These items can be sold on your behalf or donated.  The items can be dropped of at the office and a form filled out with your details.
