Commemorative Windows Appeal
In 2006 Westlake Boys High School opened a superb new administration complex, auditorium and performing arts centre; the result of a number of years' planning and fundraising under the auspices of the Board of Trustees, and the Headmaster at that time, Mr Jim Dale, together with the school's pupils and parents. The $11.9 million building boasts a number of innovations that place it in the front rank of performing arts venues in North Shore City, let alone those enjoyed by most schools. It is expected to serve the school and community for many years.
To mark the occasion, a series of eight commemorative windows have been completed and will soon be placed on the east side wall of the new Westlake Boys High School Auditorium. The windows have been crafted in stained glass, and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school's foundation.
These commemorative windows were designed by Westlake Boys High School's own designer Dugald Page. Many old boys will remember Dugald, who commenced teaching fine arts at the school in 1961. Dugald, an Ilam graduate, taught at Westlake Boys High School for ten years, then for another decade at North Shore Teachers College before moving on to the Auckland College of Education, then back to Westlake Boys High School.
We are inviting donations toward the cost of the commemorative stained glass windows. Any donation toward this cost will be gratefully accepted, as total expenditure is anticipated to reach $50,000.
Pictured is a section of the final striking result from months of conception and design by Dugald, in conjunction with Richard Wiki and Dorothy Ratcliff, The Glassroom, Christchurch.
Contributors who donate gifts of $1,000 and above will have their names inscribed on a communal brass plaque mounted beside the windows. You will also receive a commemorative booklet explaining the windows' art work and your own unique piece of mounted glass art work designed and created by Dugald Page. The artwork will be ideal for display in the home or office.
There is also an opportunity to have your family's name (or the name of your son or sons, as past pupils) etched as an enduring remembrance within the school, by donating toward an entire window. Each individual window is valued at $6,250. You will receive all the benefits outlined above, with a unique brass plaque mounted underneath your family's commemorative window.
Please share in this celebration of the school's pride in its foundation heritage. This heritage belongs to all who are associated with the school.
We encourage you to make a contribution by clicking here to download a form. The donations are tax deductible.
The Stained Glass Windows have now been installed in the Auditorium and the impact is striking.
