“Guyland” – Monday 7 August

What: “Finding Guyland – The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men”. An evening with international teen parenting expert, author and TED Talk presenter, Michael Kimmel

When: Monday 7th August – Westlake Boys High School

Time: 7.00pm – 8.30pm

Price: $10 per ticket available online at Eventbrite

We are very fortunate to have secured the services of international teen parenting expert, author and TED talk presenter Michael Kimmel. Dr Kimmel authored the Amazon bestselling book “Guyland – The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men”. If you enjoyed Celia Lashlie’s “He’ll Be OK” and you value the principles of the “Good Man Project” that Celia championed, you’ll enjoy the evidence-based advice on “growing good men” that Michael has to offer.

Westlake PTA is kindly hosting this event for all parents in the Westlake community. Please spread the word amongst your friends and families – parents with children at other schools are welcome to come along.

A synopsis of Guyland the book:

“The passage from adolescence to adulthood was once clear. Today, growing up has become more complex and confusing, as young men drift casually through school and beyond—hanging out, partying, playing with tech toys, watching sports. But beneath the appearance of a simple extended boyhood, a more dangerous social world has developed, far away from the traditional signposts and cultural signals that once helped boys navigate their way to manhood—a territory Michael Kimmel has identified as “Guyland.” …. Only by understanding this world and this life stage can we enable young men to chart their own paths, stay true to themselves, and emerge safely from Guyland as responsible and fully formed male adults”.

Sweeney Todd Show

Tickets for the Westlake Boys and Girls Production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ are selling fast! Don’t miss out!

You will be transported back to Victorian London where embittered barber, Sweeney Todd, forms an unlikely collaboration with pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett, in a tale of love and longing, vengeance and vindication.  Dark humour, matched with memorable music, make for a richly entertaining show.  Our talented cast and crew are extremely proud of this production as they bring it to life with sharp intensity on stage.

Tuesday, 25th July is a special Gala Opening Night, when blood-red beverages and ‘canapies’ will be served from 6.45pm and you will have the opportunity to have your photo taken in THE barber’s chair (though we promise no real blood!)  There will be a prize for the audience member with the best themed costume.

Tickets are on sale here

This annual event offers mums and sons an opportunity to spend some quality time together while enjoying a yummy breakfast provided by the Rowing Society and a presentation from Westlaker Bruce Pilbrow, former CEO of The Parenting Place and currently General Manager of Marketing & Engagement for World Vision NZ.

All students and their mothers, grandmothers and/or female role models are invited to attend.

We understand it can be difficult to get teenagers out of bed, but boys can usually be enticed by good food so check out the great options that will be on offer here 2017 Breakfast Menu.

About Bruce Pilbrow

If that isn’t enough to entice you then you won’t want to miss the opportunity to hear our guest speaker Bruce Pilbrow.

Bruce will talk about the importance of mother and son relationships and understanding how each other ticks.  He will have advice on releasing young leaders and life changers into the world who have four key attributes – a self to live with, a work to live for, a belief to live by and a cause worth your life!

Bruce and his wife of 27 years, Amanda, have three grown-up children, so he speaks from experience and he is passionate about the importance of getting the family unit right.

Bruce, who attended Westlake as a student from 1981 to 1986, has many years of experience in roles related to children and young adults.  He is General Manager of Marketing and Engagement at World Vision New Zealand, which partners with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.  He is also Chairman of the Board of Zeal, who use the arts as a positive influence on troubled youth, and a director of the National Child Cancer Network.  In 2011 he was appointed a White Ribbon Ambassador, making a stand against violence in families.  Previous roles include CEO of The Parenting Place and of CanTeen, who support young people with cancer.

Please order your tickets this week. We look forward to seeing you there.
