Course Selection Requirements


Year 10 Curriculum

All Year 10 students study a compulsory set of core subjects comprising English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Finance and Society, Media and Society, Physical Education and Hauora. Extension classes will be run in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Student’s examination results will determine entry into these classes.

All students need to select THREE full year option subjects from the list below.

  • Spanish for Beginners (not available to native speakers)
  • Korean for Beginners (not available to native speakers)
  1. Select ONE Technology course from:
  • Technology
  • Design and Visual Communication
  • Digital Technology (Computing)
  • Food Technology
  1. Select ONE course from (do not select a course that you have already chosen).
  • Art
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Spanish for Beginners (not available to native speakers)
  • Korean for Beginners (not available to native speakers)
  • Maori
  • Maori Performing Arts
  • Technology
  • Graphics and Design
  • Digital Technology (Computing)
  • Food Technology

  • Music
  • Academy of Sport Basketball
  • Academy of Sport Cricket
  • Academy of Sport Distance Running
  • Academy of Sport Elite Sportsmen
  • Academy of Sport Football
  • Academy of Sport Hockey
  • Academy of Sport Rowing
  • Academy of Sport Rugby

In Year 11, a NCEA student will take:

  1. English
  2. Mathematics
  3. A Science OR a Technology Course (this includes Food Technology, Graphics (DVC), Computing, and all Materials Technology courses).
  4. A Language OR History OR Geography OR Art OR Music OR Drama OR Alternate Science.
  5. Option One: any subject currently available in the NCEA Pathway
  6. Option Two: any subject currently available in the NCEA Pathway

* If you select Combined Science it counts for TWO of your SIX courses in 2017

If any issues arise regarding the availability of courses in the selection process in the NCEA pathway please see Mr Jackson.

All students in Year 10 will be interviewed regarding their 2018 course selections.

Year 12 NCEA Course Selection

  1. All Year 12 students must select a full year English course.
  2. All Year 12 students must then select five other full year courses.
  3. All Year 12 courses are assessed by Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards and earn credits towards the National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) Level 2.
  4. Year 12 students who want University Entrance should select at least 5 University Entrance subjects.
  5. Students cannot select more than two courses from the: Art, Commerce, Physical Education, Science, or Technology faculties.

Final confirmation of courses will occur after the results become available in Mid-January.

Confirmed course selections will be available in the parent portal.

Year 12 Cambridge Course Selection

  1. All students must select English
  2. Then select THREE other subjects
  3. If you wish to select an NCEA course please see Mr Gordon. Depending on class sizes the following Level 2 NCEA courses are available to CIE students: Art Design, Art Visual, Design and Visual Communication, Photography, Media Studies, Music, Maori and Classics
  4. Students cannot select more than two courses from the Commerce or Science faculties.

Final confirmation of courses will occur after the results become available in Mid-January.

Year 13 NCEA Course Selection:

  1. All Year 13 students must select SIX Subjects.
  2. Year 13 students who want University Entrance should select at least 5 University Entrance subjects.
  3. Students cannot select more than TWO courses from the; Art, Commerce, Physical Education, or Technology faculties.
  4. NCEA students can select Scholarship. This enrols you in a course to prepare you for the Scholarship exams. You must select four subjects. This course counts as one of your six subjects. This course targets top NCEA students particularly those with Merit or Excellence Endorsement, or those with outstanding ability in at least ONE subject. i.e. Art

Final confirmation of courses will occur after the NCEA Level 2 results become available in Mid-January.

Year 13 Cambridge Course Selection

  1. Select FOUR subjects. There are no compulsory subjects
  2. You should select THREE or FOUR A2 subjects
  3. If you select THREE A2 subjects, you can
    • Select Scholarship. This enrols you in a course to prepare you for the Scholarship exams. You must select 4 subjects. This course counts as one of your four subjects.
    • Select an AS course.
    • Select an NCEA course.
  4. Students cannot select 3 subjects from the Commerce or Science faculties in one year.

Final confirmation of courses will occur after the results become available in Mid-January.
