Deutschmobil on Tour

The Deutschmobil team hits the roads of New Zealand once again in 2010! This year they have a special treat - the classic car of the former GDR, the Trabi (lovingly called 'Race cardboard'). The little car got shipped to NZ and is now the only Trabi over here.

In order to get New Zealand students excited about the German language the Deutschmobil visits different schools, engaging students in different games and activities. The topic of this year's trip is the fall of the Berlin Wall, just in time for the 20th anniversary of German reunification on 3 October 2010.

Our Westlake students have certainly enjoyed their ‘Trabi-lessons’ and learnt a lot about the German reunification and the car, which is not the most reliable of all vehicles. All students of German completed several quizzes, puzzles and games and received prizes in the form of little rubber Trabis. Quite unusually for a German car, its top-speed is about 80 km per hour and it is made out of cardboard. According to our visitors from the Goethe-Institute it also frequently decides to die when going downhill. Good luck to the team that is going to drive the little Trabi all the way back to Wellington.
