Examination Results: 2010
Westlake Boys High School is proud of the results achieved by our students. Each year, we publish our results as a school, and then our NCEA and Cambridge results separately.
In 2011, our results overall were very good: our students are achieving consistently to a significantly higher level than boys in other schools.
| NCEA Level 1 / IGCSE | NCEA Level 2 / AS Level | NCEA Level 3 / A Level | |
| 2010 | 88% | 80% | 75% |
| 2009 | 78% | 78% | 75% |
| 2008 | 77% | 79% | 69% |
| 2007 | 80% | 77% | 74% |
In Year 11, 222 of 278 NCEA students passed Level 1; 180 of 181 Cambridge students passed IGCSE.
In Year 12, 181 of 256 NCEA students passed Level 2; 156 of 163 Cambridge students passed AS Level.
In Year 13, 123 of 219 NCEA students passed Level 3; 155 of 159 Cambridge students passed A Level.
In 2010, 279 Year 13 students achieved University Entrance; 93 did not.
In 2009, 253 Year 13 students achieved University Entrance; 89 did not.
In 2008, 255 Year 13 students achieved University Entrance; 96 did not.
A significantly higher number of our boys gain University Entrance than in other schools in New Zealand.
The national figures in 2010 were:
| Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | |
| All schools | 70% | 75% | 67% |
| All Decile 8-10 schools | 79% | 81% | 72% |
These results show that Westlake boys are achieving at a higher level than in most other schools, especially at Level 1.
In 2010, our results indicate that the school continues to perform very well. In Year 11, students performed significantly better than in 2009. The overall ‘pass rate’ has improved markedly as a result of much better figures at Level 1 NCEA and continued improvement at IGCSE. In Year 12, the overall combined pass rate has risen slightly, arresting a small slide over the past two years; in Year 13, we have sustained last year’s recovery from the small 2008 dip.
The number of students achieving University Entrance has risen markedly to 279. There was a large increase in the number of boys staying onto Year 13, and it is pleasing that this means that a higher proportion of our students now reach this standard.
Scholarship: 2010
Our boys have the opportunity to sit the New Zealand Scholarship examinations in their last year at school. Scholarships can be awarded in most subjects, and we encourage our boys to enter them. The awards offer the greatest challenge available to school students in New Zealand, and carry with them money to help finance their years in university.
Each year, a number of our top students are awarded ‘Outstanding Scholarships’.In 2010, one of our students was named in the 'Top Nine' students in New Zealand, earning $10,000 a year for the duration of his time at university. In 2008, two of our boys received
‘Premier Scholar’ awards, placing them in the ‘Top Ten’ performers nationwide and gaining the same award. We are confident even more will do so in the future.
In 2010, students at Westlake Boys achieved 54 Scholarships, including 8 at 'Outstanding' level. In 2009, they achieved 45, and in 2008, they achieved 68.
