For the third consecutive year, reigning New Zealand Secondary Schools champions, Westlake Boys Premier Squash team, captured the Auckland title at the College Sports Auckland Squash Team Championships. The team also secured the Peter V. Williams Shield.
Held at the North Shore Squash Club from 21-22 June, Westlake dominated the championships from the earlier rounds and remained unbeaten in all their matches leading up to the finals against traditional rivals Auckland Grammar School.
In the finals, Akil Afghan gave Westlake the first point with a comfortable 3-0 win. He was followed on court by team captain Rafa Yam who also won his match with ease with the same 3-0 score line. Up 2-0, Westlake needed one more win to clinch the title. Matthew Lucente got the job done with a 3-1 win over his opponent and consequently handed Westlake its third consecutive Auckland title.
With the title safely in the hands of the Westlake team, David Matthews showed total control in his match to win in straight games and put Westlake 4-0 up. With no letting up, Gabe Yam sealed the championships with another straightforward win to give Westlake a 5-0 score in the finals. Tom Taylor, the newest addition to the Premier team contributed solidly with strong wins in the quarter and semi-finals games against Glendowie College and Liston College.
Westlake Boys would like to congratulate the team on their outstanding achievements and especially thank coach Mr Manu Yam and teacher in charge Mr Mike Calver for their dedication and commitment to the Westlake Boys Squash Programme.
