Headmaster’s Newsletter 30 January 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians

Happy New Year.  It is great to be back and I hope you all had an enjoyable, safe and relaxing break.

We have had a busy start to the year and we are into full teaching programmes already.  Your sons should all have homework this weekend.

This morning we welcomed to Westlake our new students, parents and staff at our powhiri.  Thank you to those of you that were able to come along.  I said this morning that your sons’ education is a partnership between school and home.  We will do our best to support you and do the best job we can to help your sons leave Westlake with some qualifications to be proud of.  We ask in return that you support us with our way of doing things.  We are grateful that you chose to send your sons to our school, thank you.

Congratulations to all of last year’s senior students on their external examination results which they have received over the last couple of weeks.  All of the results are yet to be finalised.  Once they are, we will send details in a forthcoming newsletter.  We do know that last year’s Year 13 achieved the best ever set of results for a Year 13 cohort at Westlake Boys’ High School and that our endorsement rates in the respective NCEA qualifications were our best ever.

Next Thursday is our annual House Haka Competition starting at 1.30pm.  All parents are welcome to attend this special event in our annual school calendar.

Enjoy the newsletter.  We look forward to a happy and successful 2015.

David Ferguson

Biology Conservation Trip Summary

Over the last year, we have been busily preparing and fundraising in order to take fourteen Westlake Boys’ High School students to South Africa on a Conservation Expedition with Operation Wallacea.

Conservation Tour collage 1

We spent one week in the Balule Reserve in the greater Kruger National Park to learn about how the plants and animals are conserved and managed in the reserve. We then travelled down to Sodwana bay, where the focus turned to the monitoring and conservation of the marine species in the reserve through scuba diving.  Each day, the boys received lectures from scientists, academics and conservationists and helped to monitor and collect data on a variety of species to assist in projects at both sites.  It was a truly amazing experience to be able to not only experience seeing the wonderful array of wildlife, but importantly to be able to be part of the conservation efforts in order for future generations to be able to continue to enjoy it too.Miss Jihan El-Labany, Biology Teacher.

Westlake Rowing – Christmas Regatta and Cambridge Town Cup

Over the Christmas holidays, the Westlake rowing squad attended two regattas and a very intensive week long training camp in preparation for the rest of our season.  It was great to have Mr Ferguson come to see us train and attend a special dinner with many of our wonderful parents and coaches who continuously give their time and support to enable us to reach our rowing goals.

Epworth Camp 1

Our hard work is beginning to pay off, as you can see in the Christmas Rowing Results – and with a bit of fine tuning, our squad should be in great shape for the rest of the season.Dion Lee – Rowing Captain

Cricket News

Westlake entered two sides in the annual Student Horizons T20 tournament as preparation for the 2015 season. The senior side beat Auckland Grammar School by 1 run in a very tense opening match. Two more victories against Rangitoto College and Auckland Grammar School’s 2nd XI ensured a semi-final against Auckland Grammar 1st XI.

The team played well but fell just short which meant they faced St. Paul’s from Hamilton in the play off for third and fourth place. Unfortunately the opposition proved too strong for the team who were missing some senior placers due to Auckland U17 representation. Westlake’s 2nd XI was made up largely of Colts players from last year. The boys played well despite only beating Rangitoto over the three days. Al in all it was a valuable three days for coaches and players alike.

Congratulations to the following Westlake cricket players who represented Auckland teams over the summer months:

  • Year 8 tournament team – Jock McKenzie and Daniel Maddren
  • Year 9 tournament team – Quinn Sunde
  • Year 10 tournament team – Campbell Knowles and Ryan Quinn
  • Auckland U17 – Adam Baard, Ben Beecroft, Angus McKenzie, William O’Donnell (captain) and Keegan Russell. Special congratulations go to Keegan, who was also selected for the New Zealand U17 tournament team.

Meanwhile Westlakers Carl, Craig and Brad Cachopa and Robbie O’Donnell have been enjoying a successful season for the Auckland Aces and the team will compete in the Ford Trophy Grand Final at Colin Maiden Park this Sunday. Westlakers Elliot Herd and Max O’Dowd were part of the Auckland A side that claimed the national title in Lincoln earlier this year. The A’s were coached by Westlaker and former Black Caps player Andre Adams. Westlaker Matt Jones was part of the U19 team who claimed the National title in Lincoln.

Squash: Westlake Boys Named To New Zealand Junior Team

The 2015 season is indeed shaping up to be a very exciting and promising one for Westlake Squash.

The national governing organisation for New Zealand Squash recently named Rafa Yam, Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam to the New Zealand junior team which will take on Australia in this year’s Trans Tasman Junior Test Series. This highly competitive series will involve play offs between New Zealand and Australian top two boys and two girls in the under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 19 age groups.WBHS Squash team captain and Auckland’s highest graded junior player Rafa Yam will represent New Zealand in the Under 17 division along with another player from Bay of Plenty, whilst NZ U15 Champion Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam will team up in the U15s. image
The selection reflects the boys’ strong performance last season and continued hard work throughout the holidays. Aside from off court fitness workouts and regular training sessions at their home club Belmont Park, the boys along with WBHS premier team members Stuart Martin and David Matthews also attended a summer training camp run by world ranked and Commonwealth Games player Lance Beddoes. Matthew and Rafa have also been given the opportunity to join several training sessions with the New Zealand mens team at the National Squash Centre. The experience allowed them to gain valuable lessons as they played alongside professional international squash players and receive mentoring from the NZ team high performance coach. The Trans-Tasman Test series will take place in Invercargill from 14-15 April, and form part of a mini-circuit that includes:

  • Australia Junior Open, Sydney, 3-6 April • New Zealand Junior Open, Timaru, 10-12 April • Trans-Tasman Junior Test Series, Invercargill, 14-15 April • Oceania Junior Age Group Championships, Invercargill, 17-19 April.

Optimist Sailing Champion

Westlake Boys first year student Robbie McCutcheon enjoyed a very successful summer on the water winning the Optimist class of the India International Regatta in Chennai. This was a great result for the third former, who competed against the Malaysian, Hong Kong, Indian teams, as well as some European teams. He finished 11th in the Australian Nationals. Overall it was a fantastic effort considering the opposition included two British world team yachtsmen in the top ten as well. Robbie McCutcheon
Robbie also went on to win both his regattas at the Auckland Championships held over Auckland Anniversary weekend, ranking him number two in New Zealand.

Kerikeri Sailing Regatta

In the school holidays the Westlake Boys sailing team travelled north to compete in the Kerikeri regatta. With a forecast of heavy winds and rain, the team hoped that some sailing would be possible. The first day of sailing happened in strong but sailable winds and the Westlake team went out and enjoyed the conditions. Unfortunately the wind proved too strong for some of the other teams in the competition which meant that sailing was delayed until lighter winds.

Once the racing started again on day two, Westlake put in a strong performance winning all races and gaining first place at the end of the day. The strong winds continued into day three but the team managed to keep their high level of sailing skills up and eventually won by 20 points, beating long time rivals Kerikeri who finished runners up.

The win was a great start to the New Year for the Westlake yachting team consisting of Michael Stern (captain), Josh Handa, Tom Fyfe, Blake Nicholson, Harry Milne and Matt Jacobi. The boys showed good speed and sound tactics. Thanks to Mrs. Stern for the great food and Westlaker Sam Wallis for his coaching assistance.

NZ Secondary Schools Athletics and Road Running Results 2014

Westlake had a number of students competing at the 42nd New Zealand Secondary Schools Track, Field and Road Championships in Whanganui early December 2014 with some outstanding results for our teams. The junior boys three man team won gold and silver medals were won by the junior boys six man team, the year 9 three man team and the year 9 six man team. The Senior Boys six man team took out the bronze medal.Individually our boys enjoyed some great successes as well.
